What is Digital Marketing?

In this article, I want to talk about digital marketing in general terms. According to worldometers data, 7,834,210,500 people currently live in the world; and according to internet lives stats data, 4,774,972,847 of these people are internet users.

When we examine this data, we see that the internet exists in our lives to a great extent, right?

With the development of technology, we can easily access everything with computers, tablets and phones, we can find the information we want with Google in seconds, we can order the food we want from home, we can do our grocery shopping online, we can attend to our work and education from our home via the internet. As technology developed; our lifestyle, shopping and purchasing habits also changed. Especially in 2020, the rate of being online and online shopping increased even more because of the pandemic process.

In a world where everything is starting to go online, marketing could not be expected to continue only with traditional methods, right? Marketing studies in the digital world are known with many names such as digital marketing, online marketing, internet marketing.

So, What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing in a business, brand, nonprofit organizations, individuals, etc. is the marketing process in the digital environment. It covers all marketing activities using electronic devices or internet. In the digital marketing process, brands use many methods to reach their customers, promote or sell their products and services; such as social media, e-mail marketing, search engine marketing (SEM).

Digital marketing provides many advantages to both businesses and potential customers. For example; a boutique in Istanbul is to get the opportunity to make sales, reaching the target audience that is not only in Istanbul but anywhere in Turkey, thanks to digital marketing. Google Ads or Facebook, Instagram etc. can advertise on the platforms within seconds with the budget you want, you can stop the advertisement in seconds if you want. You can create your target audience and prepare a targeted advertising campaign directly. Customers can quickly access the products and services they need.

We are now in a two-way communication era, brands and target customers are communicating on digital platforms. Businesses can measure the performance of their campaigns with the reactions of customers to products and services such as comments and likes. It is also possible to see how effective your ads are, how many people the ad was shown, how many people clicked on your ad, how many people did shopping, etc. These data are to guide businesses in other marketing activities to be done in digital.

Marketing costs can be lower in digital marketing compared to traditional marketing. In traditional marketing, you advertise to people who are not even your target audience, it is quite costly to advertise to a wide audience and you cannot reach how well your ad is performing. However, by creating a target audience in digital marketing, you can directly advertise to the target and access the performance data of your advertisement. For this reason, digital marketing is given great importance today and all businesses, small and large, use these marketing methods.

What’s in the Digital Marketing Ecosystem?

In order to exist in the digital world and be able to do digital marketing, you must first have a website and social media accounts. You should produce content related to your business on your website and social media accounts.

Businesses can develop marketing strategies to be visible in search engines such as Google and Yahoo. With SEM (Search Engine Marketing), you can buy ad space in search engines such as Google and make your website appear on the first page and top rank when the keyword you want to advertise is searched for. When people search on Google, they usually look at the first results.

However, it is more important to grow organically and stay on the top of search engines permanently. For this, you can produce content suitable for SEO (Search Engine Optimization); so you must produce unique and relevant content for your business, blog etc. With content marketing, you can attract the attention of your target audience by using interesting articles, images, videos, etc.

For example; If a coffee shop website has blog posts about coffee in addition to its own products, you can attract the attention of your target audience such as frequently searched information about coffee, interesting information etc. and turn them into your customers. For SEO, it is especially important to determine the keyword suitable for the business. Apart from this, we now make search from our phones rather than computers, so the website should be mobile-friendly, which is one of the most influencing factors in your SEO score.

On your website, you should make sure that your customers are registered to your e-mail list. By sending daily, weekly, monthly bulletins to their mails; you can send campaigns, blog posts, announcements etc. Email marketing is one of the most important tools of digital marketing.

Visual advertisements can be given on news sites, etc., and video ads or content can be created on platforms such as Youtube.

Social media is one of the most important digital marketing tools. Businesses can also advertise by selecting their target audience from social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. They do this directly with the advertising tools of the platforms or through Influencers.
